A healthy hoof is the foundation of soundness in the horse. There are steps a horse owner can take to help support healthy hooves in their horse. Fatty Acids play a role in hoof health as they help in connecting hoof horn cells, and help sustain a permeability barrier. A good source of Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in Platinum Performance® Equine or Platinum Performance® CJ. In addition, these formulas contain the Amino Acids, Minerals and Vitamins that are important for hoof health. Supplementing for Hoof Health
Supplementation can play a major role in keeping hooves strong and healthy. Because the hoof wall is in a continuous state of growth, levels of vitamins, trace minerals, Omega-3's, antioxidants and amino acid levels will affect the integrity of the hoof. Some of the elements that many horses benefit from include:
1. Amino Acids, such as Methionine, stimulate strong, healthy hoof growth, and are essential in supporting healthy hooves to prevent brittleness and cracks in the hoof.
2. Macro Minerals, including Calcium and Phosphorus, help maintain health of the bone and soft tissue structures in the foot.
3. Trace Minerals like Copper, Zinc and Manganese provide strength to the hoof wall. Zinc also supports cells and blood vessels that are important for healthy hoof growth. Adequate Copper is required for normal bone and cartilage development in the hoof.
4. Biotin is an important vitamin that supports hoof health. Supplementation of Biotin is often associated with improved hoof wall strength and increased rate of hoof growth.

Are equine diets that include a lot of grain bad for my horse's hooves?
Horses should be maintained at an ideal Body Conditioning Score (BCS) of between 4 to 6 (out of 9) because equine obesity and complications from metabolic conditions are often linked to hoof problems. Horses that are given a diet high in grain and soluble carbohydrates are more prone to developing these hoof health issues.
