Healthy Skin and Coat
An allergy is characterized by hypersensitivity to something (allergen) that creates an inflammatory response in the respiratory system or on the skin. A horse experiencing an allergic reaction may cough, have teary eyes, raised lumps on the skin, or be feverish and itchy. The most common allergens are mold spores, insect bites and proteins found in certain pasture grasses. There are several dietary changes that can help your horse deal with immune system response to these environmental factors. Allergy Relief: Omega-3s vs Omega-6s
There is a correlation between the ratio of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats that your horse consumes, and his ability to respond to an allergen. Omega-3 fatty acids can help during allergic reaction. Omega-6 fatty acids, on the other hand, can exacerbate the inflammatory response.
